Helensvale Highlights

Senior Art - Visions
The VISIONS Art Exhibition was officially opened on Tuesday 20 October showcasing work from across our
students studying Art, Digital Art, Design, FTV and Photography. With a wonderful turn out from our parents, wider community and prospective Art Excellence Year 7's for next year, Jodi Ferrari (the Public Program's Officer at the Gold Coast City Art Gallery) opened the exhibition to the delight of all.

This years’ showcase, like the many years that have preceded it, was a feast for the eyes and did not disappoint. We acknowledged 5 students on the night for their efforts in their chosen fields:
The Paparazzi Award: Jarrod Wilcock
The Digital Designer Award: Tyler Burchell

The Creative Enhancement Award: Jessica Jacob
The Rising Star Award: Amber Ayton

The Vision and Spirit Award: Ruby Graham

Congratulations to everyone involved in organising such a fantastic exhibition.
Mrs Bonita Winters
HOD Visual & Performing Arts

Dance - Encore
Dance students from Year 7 to Year 12 participated in the annual dance showcase Encore on the 9th of October. The night was the culmination of this year’s hard work, from both classroom dance classes and the performance troupe. The standard was impeccable and the enjoyment could be seen on the face of each and every student.
It was a great night of dance enjoyed by all!

Film and TV - VAFA Awards
Last week saw the Vale Art Film Awards, or the VAFAs, take place at the Helensvale Cultural Centre. The VAFAs are a celebration of student success throughout the year and an opportunity for community, parents, students and staff to come together in one night filled with wonderment and excitement.
Guests arrived dressed to impress as they walked the red carpet and had photos taken either with an 8 foot Oscar, or some fun in the photo booth. Guests mingled as they snacked on popcorn and eagerly awaited the award ceremony.
What makes the VAFAs really special is the support from our wider community. We had Jonathan Brimson, a guest presenter and industry film editor, Councillor William Owen Jones from Division 2, Stuart Lumsden, the Director of Acting from the New York Film Academy of Australia, Michelle Campbell from Gold Coast Tafe and the Honourable Stuart Robert MP, Federal Member for Fadden.
The feedback from our distinguished guests was overwhelming positive and everyone is even more excited for the awards next year.

Track and Field Sports Excellence

Desi Johnson and Devan Simpson doing what ESP Track & Field students do best - bringing home medals! Both athletes finished with bronze in their 100m finals. Great work and congratulations to you both! The hard work has paid off.

Congratulations to Vai Leota for her bronze medal performance in the 16 Girls triple jump at the QSSA Track and Field State Championships. Awesome result!!

Charlie Comes to Visit
Students at the Literacy Intervention Reading program have been treated to a visit from Charlie the black kelpie. The literacy loving pooch usually accompanies owner Debbie White to work at the Magnolia Aged Care Centre, but he is loving the interaction with and being read to by the students. The weekly visits are providing an incentive for students to continue their hard work and dedication in improving their reading. It has become a great opportunity for the kids to show off their developing confidence and literacy skills.  It is these skills that enable them to access a broad range of texts every day, across a wide range of subjects that high school students are required to study.
