Helensvale Highlights

Friday saw the last of our International Study Tours for the year J and it was a huge one day tour with 84 boys from Takanawa Boys High School in Japan.  They took part in specialised activities throughout the school such as Arakan Martial Arts, Reptile Show and Aboriginal art.  The boys loved the hands on activities and eagerly took part in the activities.  Study Tour group Buddy Leaders showed true leadership qualities leading their group on a tour around the school and guiding them to all activities throughout the day.
This is the fifth year that Takanawa boys High has visited Helensvale High and their Principal Mr Sakamoto expressed that he hopes they can return in 2016 and continue our long standing friendship.
Lunchtime was full on serving up 200 sausage sandwiches, 180 pies along with drinks and fruit and of course the biggest cake made the whole group smile in delight.
Not only did the visiting students have a great time but the HSHS ”buddies” enjoyed the day and made many friends.  We have amazing students who did us proud.  It was a great day that I am sure our visiting students will always remember their day at Helensvale State High.

Our school community has prioritised reading improvement this year. We have many different reading programs and activities running to support our students’ literacy improvement.   During Futures year 7 and 8 students will be competing to win the illustrious Between the Lines Inference Cup and Spelling Sleuth competitions. As well as the coveted perpetual trophies, the winners will receive book vouchers to ‘Love That Book’ at Westfield Helensvale. Students will soon sit an exam to determine the victors for both years 7 and 8. The details are as follows:
Between the Lines Inference Cup
The two year 7 students with the highest test score and the score showing the most improvement will each win a $50 voucher.  The year two year 8 students with the highest test score and the score showing the most improvement will each receive a $100 voucher.
Spelling Sleuth Competition
Our Spelling Sleuths will be discovered when students are given a 30 word spelling test of commonly misspelt and other challenging words. Students have been learning these words throughout the year and we are expecting the competition to be tight. Should we have ties, another test will be conducted in a knockout round. The Y7 student who receives the top score will win a $50 voucher and the Y7 second place getter- a $25 voucher. The Y8 student who receives the top prize will win a $100 voucher and the second place getter –a $50 voucher. If students require another complete list of words the test words will be selected from the need to see their English teacher.
Prize winners to be announced in week 10.

Great Results Guarantee HOD
Last Thursday Night over 400 parents, students and special guests attended the annual Sport Awards evening at Sea World's New Conference Centre. It was a fun filled night with Victoria Carthew hosting again and some unbelievable gift and prizes donated to the award recipients and lucky door raffle. Grant Hackett was very inspiring, focusing some insight into the world of an Olympic Gold medallist and focusing on our theme for the night RESILIENCE. I would like to thanks the following sponsors for their continued support and making our students feel so special.
