Helensvale Highlights

Humanities Factulty

The Humanities faculty has had a wonderful term so far, in particular, engaging Geography students in curriculum-based excursions to gather primary data.
Representatives from each Year 7 class were selected by their teachers to become the ‘experts’.  Accompanied by Ms Dron, Mrs Vickers and Mr Lewis, the group travelled by foot down Discovery Drive from our school to Helensvale library. Throughout the walk, students gathered information, made observations and took photographs which they collated with their classes to assess and evaluate the liveability of Helensvale. All in all, students found our suburb to be a pretty great place to live and community to be a part of!
Year 11 Geography students also experienced a day out on the Broadwater. Throughout their studies on coastal areas, the class has learned specifically about the cruise ship terminal and entertainment precinct proposals and the impacts they could have on the Gold Coast. The group gathered data and made observations at various locations including the Spit, South Stradbroke Island, the intertidal flats and Wavebreak Island. A big thank you to Miss Green and Mr Owen for coordinating this real-life experience for our students.

This term, we have also been fortunate enough to celebrate the successes of our language students. In Term 3, many students were involved in several different language based competitions including:

Gold Coast MLTAQ and Griffith University Language Speech Contest
-          12 competitors from Years 7-9
-          3 highly commended (one of which was 4th place!)
Language Perfect Queensland Championships
approximately 60 competitors across Years 7-9
9 credits, 3 bronze awards, 1 silver award and 2 gold awards (24th and 37th in the state!)
Language Perfect World Championships
-          433 hours spent online learning languages in 7 days
-          30, 130 points earned, placing us 542nd in the world out of 1077 schools
-          6th in Queensland
-          3 credit awards (top 20% of 300,000 competitors in the world)
-          3 bronze awards (top 10%)
-          3 gold awards (top 2%)
A huge congratulations to these students for their efforts, as well as to their teachers who encouraged them to compete!

Last, but certainly not least, we are about the farewell another cohort of Year 12 students. Year 12 Ancient History students were treated to the annual Bacchanalian Toga Party to celebrate their efforts over the past 2 years. With a great feast and special awards, the students had a wonderful afternoon with Mrs Costan to see out their senior year.

Visual and Performing Arts Department

The definition of evolution is: any process of formation or growth; development. As the Art Excellence cohort we invite you to experience the evolution of our artwork throughout this year. Join us under the twinkle of the fairy lights on the 23rd of October, for the Evolutions Art Exhibition that will be held in the SWELL, and is being organised by the year nine Art Excellence class.
Evolutions will display the hard work of the Art Excellence classes and will feature a range of artworks and mediums, including photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media and more. Although there are many different mediums and views, we all have the same passion which we would love to share with you. “True art is characterised by an irresistible urge in the creative artist.”-Albert Einstein.
The Year Nine Art Excellence has been given the task of the I-Gen unit; choosing a social, cultural or political issue that has occurred within their lifetime, and to comment and/or respond to this issue with a body of work. This has resulted in many artworks based around social media, body image, terrorism, natural disasters and more.
The Year Eight Art Excellence class has been working with exploring there sense of identity in the topic of Who Am I, and have begun adventuring into Hybridity and Figure In A Dreamscape which explores surrealism which will make for an stimulating and thought provoking range of artworks.
The Year Seven Art Excellence class have been tirelessly working on the unit Sixteen Drawings, which features an everyday object drawn in sixteen different mediums. They have also been working on making 3D shoes, adding dimension to exhibition.

Morning Melodies

The final instrumental concert, Morning Melodies, was held last Monday, November 16 in the Performing Arts Centre. It was a terrific culmination of the year’s work for our instrumental students, their parents and our music staff.
The morning featured both large and small ensemble performances and presentations of certificates to our SHEP students and our Year 12 students leaving us. There were also trophies for the most improved players in Woodwind, Brass, String and Percussion sections. The most outstanding players in these sections were also awarded a trophy for their efforts this year.
Many thanks to the students and parents for their efforts and support this year and a huge thank you to the instrumental staff who strive to make our program the best it can be. We look forward to another busy and enjoyable year of Instrumental music making in 2016.

SHINE 2015- A student perspective
Lights, camera, action, SHINE! We knew as we arrived and the Red Carpet was awaiting us that a fun-filled night was in store.  The staff had put in a tremendous amount of effort to celebrate the students efforts over the past year. The tireless amount of work definitely paid off on this incredible night full of dancing, singing and performing arts awards that were awarded to many talented students. From the school musical “Oliver”, to Drama Festivals, Encore, Fanfare, Eisteddfods, Music Festivals and much more, students were all recognised for their passion and dedication in the Arts. We had a ’SHINE wall’, where students could write their most enjoyable and memorable moments over the past year, doing what they love - performing, and didn’t that get filled fast! What a fantastic night.
Thank you enormously Performing Arts Department, everyone had such a wonderful night, we hope to do it again next year!
