Yr 7 & 8 Reading

13/07/2015

Year 8:

Dear Parents and Carers,

The English department is embarking on an exciting new reading comprehension initiative for our Year 7 & students this term.
Teachers are busy creating reading booklets for homework. These contain four texts from across the Year 8 curriculum and complementary questions. These questions are deliberately challenging and students are not expected to answer these without support. Support could be: using a dictionary or thesaurus, discussing the possible answers with a parent or other family member, working with a peer.  A reading booklet will be issued during the first English lesson each week and will be due in the third lesson each week for marking and explicit teaching.
The intent of this approach is to see what the students can learn as opposed to testing what they already know. If you would like to discuss your child’s ability to participate in this program please contact his/her class teacher.

Year 7:
Dear Parents and Carers,
The English department is embarking on an exciting new reading comprehension initiative for our Year 7 students this term. Teachers will be reading the novel ‘The Recruit’ by Robert Muchamore in class and the students will be required to answer questions about the novel for homework.
These questions are deliberately challenging and students are not expected to do these without support. Support could be: using a dictionary or thesaurus, discussing the possible answers with a parent or other family member, working with a friend.
A reading booklet will be sent home at the beginning of each week and the students need to answer the questions for each chapter they read in class that day. The booklet must be brought back to school each day for marking and explicit teaching.
The intent of this approach is to see what the students can learn as opposed to testing what they already know.
If you would like to discuss your child’s ability to participate in this program please contact his/her class teacher.

Kind regards,
