Academy Excellence programs


Helensvale State High School is pleased to offer a range of Academy Programs in Academic and Specialist areas. Academy Programs are run over years 7, 8 and 9.
 
Students can apply for a maximum of two Programs and are assessed based on one or all of the following: interview, exam, performances on USB/DVD, trial, school reports, folio of work and other relevant materials.
 
A preference must be made between any Academy Programs the student applies for due to any timetabling demands that may arise.
 
 
 
Upon acceptance into an Academy Program, a $100 Academy Program levy will be required to secure the placement. If accepted into two Programs, the $100 levy will be required for each Program.
 
It is important to note that Helensvale State High School has an enrolment management plan (PDF, 4020kb) . A limited number of places are available for students who live outside the boundary and these places are reserved for students who qualify for one of the Academy Programs.
 
All application forms are to be hand delivered to the administration office.
 
 
 
EXCITE Academic Academy Program
 
 
The aim of EXCITE Academy is to provide an academically rigorous program for students in Years 7 to 10 who have demonstrated a strong interest and commitment towards their studies. The program is designed to broaden and deepen students’ knowledge in English, Maths, Science and History allowing them to make a successful transition into the senior school.
 
In partnership with Griffith University the EXCITE program is specifically designed to develop and maximise intellectual potential in an environment that promotes a strong culture of academic excellence. Applicants are assessed on academic results, behaviour, attitude, an exam and an interview. We encourage all academy students to be ‘excellent’ in all facets of the school community and leaders in upholding our core school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.
 
 
The Arts Academy
 
Drama Academy
 
A Specialised Program aimed at students who have a passion and specific interest in Drama and caters for students who aim to study Drama in Year 7 and beyond.  Through the study of drama students are engaged in creating, performing and responding to drama as well as building skills in group work, problem solving and innovative thinking.  Many extension opportunities are provided in the Program including workshops with professional artists, artist in residence programs, theatre trips and school tours, festivals and competitions. Acceptance into the Program is via an application, and an audition.  
 
This Program will incur an additional levy.
 
Dance Academy
 
A Specialised Program for students who have a passion and specific talent in Dance (Ballet, Jazz and/or Contemporary). Dance Academy caters for students who have been learning dance for a number of years and who aim to study Dance in Year 7 and beyond.   Through the study of dance students are engaged in building skills in choreography and performance as well as learning how to respond to dance.  Many extension opportunities are provided in the Program including workshops with professional artists, theatre trips and school tours, eisteddfods and competitions.  Acceptance into the Program is via an application and an audition. 
 
This Program will incur an additional levy.
 
 
 
 
Music Academy
 
 
 
A Specialised Program for those musically talented students who have a passion for music and who have been engaged in an instrumental program or private musical tuition.  Through the study of Music students are engaged in developing skills in composition, performance and analysing music with many opportunities provided to extend their classroom practice including workshops with professional artists, theatre trips and school tours, eisteddfods and/or competitions.  Acceptance in this Program is via audition.  Students are required to submit a DVD/USB showcasing performance abilities along with the performance of scales specific to their instrument. 
 
This Program will incur an additional levy.
 
 
 
 
Art Academy
 
 
 
A Specialised Program aimed at artistically minded students who have creativity, skill and a passion for Art.   Using the enquiry model for learning students engage in developing bodies of work around conceptual frameworks and analysis of art works.  Many opportunities are provided in the Program including workshops, artist in residence, gallery visits, exhibitions and competitions.  Acceptance into this Program is via application and a folio to be submitted with application and workshop. 
 
This Program will incur an additional levy.
 
 
 
 
Sports Academy
 
 
 
The aim of the Sport Academy is to provide a supportive environment and the opportunity in which our talented students can aspire to reach their goals in all facets of their chosen sport.
Upon application students will be selected based on academic grades, effort, behaviour, sporting achievements and skills.
 he Sports Academy Program encourages and expects that students maintain and improve academic performance across the school. We encourage all academy students to be ‘excellent’ in all facets of the school community and leaders in upholding our core school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.
 
The Sports Academy offers students the opportunity to study the following sports AFL,  Rugby, Football(Soccer), Touch Football, Netball, Track and Field and Volleyball.
 
We are a member school of the Runaway Bay Sports and Leadership Excellence Centre (RBSLEC), where we hold one of our school camps.

Japanese Academy
 
The aim of Japanese Academy is to provide extensive opportunities for students to develop and gain confidence in their Japanese language skills as well as broaden their cultural awareness.  It caters for students who have a passion for language learning and a strong interest in Japanese culture.  Many extension opportunities are made available throughout our Program including sister school/study tour visits, Japanese lunch days and restaurant visits, participation in language competitions and cultural incursions/excursions.  Acceptance into the Program is via an application and an entrance examination.
This Program will incur an additional levy.
 
 
Exam/Trial/Workshop Conditions
 
If their initial application is satisfactory, students will receive an invitation to sit an Entrance Exam here at Helensvale State High.  The exam will provide students with the opportunity to display their current knowledge of basic greetings, hiragana, numbers (including kanji), self-introductions and likes & dislikes.  Students are encouraged to review these topics with their current Japanese Language teachers or on their own.  As places in the Academy Program are limited, Entrance Exam results are considered an important component of their overall application.
 
 
e4e Academy
 
The aim of the e4e Academy  is to lead the Helensvale State High  entrepreneurs and philanthropy—leaving a mark on the work via our entrepreneurialism.  We think differently, we apply ourselves and we innovate.  We understand it is rewarding to inspire others and we are passionate  about our dreams.  Do you have a ‘Dream to Succeed’.
The e4e Program begins by having a clear journey.  The subject will start by understanding ourselves, our strengths and our teams.  We like to imagine a concept, a new way of working  or a new product.  Relying on the latest neuroscience to grow and foster creative thinking patterns, we harness the point of difference in our teams and test and workshop our ideas.  We collaborate with the community  and key business leaders to gain sponsorships and present what  we have designed.
We  are tomorrows business leaders,  the people who will add value to our community.  We will  design our destiny and fill their role of tomorrow’s wealth creators'.  We are tomorrow’s social leaders and believe in the  say ‘To infinity  and  beyond’.
